Our Amazing People

At the President’s Reception in September 2013 President John Jenkins MBE launched the first of SportsAble’s Exceptional Service Awards.

They are awarded to volunteers who have given a number of years of service or, to individuals who have changed the history of SportsAble in a profound way.

After the ceremony John Jenkins was surprised when Chief of Operations Kerl Haslam and Chairman Vivienne Davies awarded him an Exceptional Service Award of his own.

Here are the dedications made to each of the five recipients. They are remarkable people and have achieved so much for SportsAble. More information coming soon.

John Jenkins MBE
In recognition of over 38 years of exceptional service to SportsAble for his commitment  to developing a sports club where each and every member finds the ‘fun, friendship and opportunity’ that they so desire.

Without his energy, drive, and passion SportsAble would have very little substance and through his tireless efforts John has ensured that every facet of the organisation continues to thrive. His determination to continue to provide a unique sports club has resulted in many lives being changed by having access to disability sport and the social fulfilment that comes with it

Philip Lewis MBE
In recognition of over 38 years of exceptional service to SportsAble as founder of our organisation in 1975, for extended service as our Vice President and for ensuring that disabled people should have fairness and equality of opportunity in sport, regardless of their level of disability thereby establishing the guiding principles which we still hold dear today

Doctor Christine Meaden M.C.S.P. PhD
In recognition of over 38 years of exceptional service to SportsAble as a founder member in 1975, as an early Committee Member, as our very first Sports Manager and as a dedicated volunteer and most notably, for utilising her expertise as a physiotherapist to develop a sports profiling system which enables disabled sportsmen and woman – no matter what their disability – to compete on equal terms

Kevin McGarry MVO
In recognition of exceptional service to SportsAble from our very early years when, as Head of Leisure Services with the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, he personally changed the design of the Maidenhead Leisure Centre so that disabled people could access the building and use the facilities. As a result, the Leisure Centre became one of SportsAble  first ‘homes’ for sport

Jocelyn Story
In recognition of over 38 years of exceptional service to SportsAble as a founder member in 1975,  as an early Committee Member, as a past Chairman, a key fundraiser, and as a Director. Jocelyn’s drive, determination and total commitment is an inspiration to us all.
