Golf Day Raises Record Total
A great day of golf was had recently at Maidenhead Golf Club where 22 teams of four took part in the annual SportsAble Charity Golf Day.
Arriving early to the beautiful 18-hole course on Shoppenhangers Road, Maidenhead, the golfers were greeted with a breakfast of bacon rolls and coffee before heading out to the putting green to practice.
Awaiting them were SportsAble volunteers Ian Donovan, Anna Frizzell, Colin Trundle and Paralympian Rebecca Gale who encouraged everyone to take part in a fun and addictive challenge to see who could deliver the steadiest putt nearest to a bottle of whiskey.
A shotgun start at 1pm started off the serious part of the competition where teams vied to win the stunning Jeremy Story glass engraved trophy as well as compete against each other to win the ‘Longest Drive,’ ‘Nearest the Pin’ and more.
Meeting back at the clubhouse later on that evening the group of 88 were in high spirits after a good day’s golf. Longterm supporters of the charity (many of whom are from local businesses such as The George on the Green pub and Wilson Partners accountancy firm) know that our auction doesn’t disappoint and they were eager to finish their hearty two-course dinner to commence the bidding.
With a stellar line- up of 4-balls donated from stunning courses such as Wentworth, Swinley Forest, The Berkshire and The Old Course at Sunningdale Golf Club auctioneer Jonathan Story had the delightful job of watching the bids rise and rise to (up to £1,000 at one point) as the keen golfers fought for a chance to play on courses that are known the world over. Altogether the event raised just over £11,000, the best amount raised to date.
After congratulating the winner of the day, team Wilson Wallabies, SportsAble’s President John Jenkins MBE said:
“Our thanks, as always to the team from MGC, especially Carolynn Callan, who works for many months to ensure that the day goes seamlessly and raises as much money and awareness for our charity as possible.
“I am absolutely amazed and delighted. Not only did we reach our £10k target but we exceeded it by £1000!
“Every £1 that the captains and their team members contributed will help bring disability sport to the disabled in Berkshire, including, of course, golf.
“They all did SportsAble proud – it is a truly amazing charity and we are so grateful for their amazing support.
Hopefully, same time, same place next year!”
