After School Club up for Award

SportsAble is delighted to announce that one of its core community projects, the SportsAble After School Club, has been shortlisted to receive a Get Berkshire Active Inspiration and Participation Award 2017.

The awards are the most prestigious sports awards in the county, recognising not just sporting endeavour and achievement but quality coaching, leadership, teamwork and volunteering as well.

Run on a weekly basis by SportsAble’s Sports Development Officers Niall McCaffrey and Damian Ng, the two-year-old After School Club, is one of three community sports projects up for the grand title of Youth Engagement Project of the Year Award.

Unique to Berkshire, the SportsAble After School Club provides fun, safe and inclusive sports and activities for children with a wide range of complex issues from Maidenhead’s Manor Green School.

Working alongside school support staff SportsAble’s team offers a diverse mix of sports such as Athletics, Boccia, Kurling, Table Tennis, Polybat, Sitting Volleyball and Wheelchair Basketball either at the disability sports charity’s Braywick Park home or on site at Manor Green.

Regardless of the location the children enjoy a tailormade para sports session that encourages relaxation, communication, focus and enjoyment.

Says Niall McCaffrey:

“There are two issues preventing disabled children remaining active:  less exposure to sport on the school curriculum and cost (the average cost of bringing up a disabled child is three times greater than bringing up a non-disabled child).

“With the help of funding from the Berkshire Sport For All networking group we are able to address those issues and run our club successfully.

“The feedback has been tremendous with comments from parents saying not just how much their children enjoy the club but how different they are – more relaxed, happier and sleeping better – at home.”

The SportsAble After School Club is a package available to other schools and we are keen to bring our expertise either on site at schools or introduce school children to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere with sessions at SportsAble. For more information please contact:
