One of the newest sports at SportsAble, Wheelchair Basketball is addictive, fast paced but fun and great for fitness. We have three Level 1 coaches, plenty of volunteers and a friendly club environment to welcome new members to the squad.
To get the team going we have had incredible support from local community. Fundraising for the much needed initial 12 wheelchairs, kit, equipment and trailer was initiated by Frazer Callingham and friends who cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End to get the project launched.
Since then we’ve had support from others – including Volvo UK who sponsored the team in its first year by providing a brand new XC60 to transport them to training and matches – and we are now partnered with Reading Rockets’ Basketball team as their official Wheelchair Basketball squad.
Of the exciting partnership, Matthew Johnson, the Rockets’ Director of Coaching, said:
” For a long time we as a club have worked hard in the running game but have always felt that there was an entire section of our sport that was missing. SportsAble were not only able to see the same issue and empathise but were also set up in such a professional way that they were ready to become an active and enthused partner with us and have helped us create what we all firmly believe will become an exciting and sustainable relationship for wheelchair basketball in our region.”
Novices and pros alike are welcome to sign-up for two teams:
– a ‘fun’ social team
– a competitive team.
All abilities welcome, including non disabled. Come and join one of Berkshire’s exciting, new Wheelchair Basketball teams!
You provide the interest and enthusiasm – we provide the sports chairs, kit, hall and coaching.
