SportsAble is Disability Confident Committed

As part of International Persons with Disability Day (3 Dec), SportsAble is pledging its support for the Government’s Disability Confident Committed scheme. After successfully completing Level one, SportsAble is now working towards Level 2 and is encouraging more employers to join the scheme and increase employment opportunities for disabled people.

Purple Space, a networking hub for disabled employees, is also using International Persons with Disability Day to launch its international #PurpleLightDay . The campaign encourages employers to consider how they can expand employment opportunities for people with disabilities and has attracted high profile organisations such as Channel 4, HSBC and Virgin Media.

In the UK alone, one in seven people lives with a disability and only 50% are employed. The government’s Disability Confident scheme is hoping more employers will be encouraged to change this culture. It is voluntary for employers who want to explore more ways in which they can embrace the talents of disabled people in the workplace. The scheme is free and provides employers with access to guidance, self-assessments and resources.

There are three levels, designed to support organisations on their Disability Confident journey and SportsAble is working towards Level 2 after successfully achieving the first level.

. The 3 levels are:
• Disability Confident Committed employer (Level 1)
• Disability Confident Employer (Level 2)
• Disability Confident leader (Level 3)
